Examination & Condition Reports for Paintings
Every sound decision about a painting starts with knowing its true condition. A condition report is a documented, impartial account of a painting’s state at a moment in time — with photographs to match.
A condition report describes the support, the paint and ground layers, the varnish, previous restorations, and any damage or instability. It is written to be understood by owners and usable by insurers, registrars, and future conservators — a record that travels with the painting.
When a condition report earns its keep
- Before a purchase — at auction, from a dealer, or privately — so the price reflects the painting’s actual state, including what the eye alone cannot see.
- Before and after a loan or exhibition, establishing the painting’s state at each handoff.
- For insurance — scheduling a work, documenting damage for a claim, or supporting a value discussion with current condition evidence.
- For estates and family divisions, where an impartial record prevents future disagreement.
How we examine
Examination takes place in our Houston studio or on site. We study the painting in normal, raking, and ultraviolet illumination, under magnification, and with infrared photography in the studio; where a question warrants it, we arrange X-radiography or laboratory analysis through specialist partners. Findings are delivered as a written report with photographic documentation. If treatment is advisable, the report can include a treatment proposal — but an examination never obligates you to treat.
If the painting can’t come to us first
A preliminary review often begins with photographs — and for works elsewhere in the country, we can go further. Working with gallery staff or art handlers who examine the painting under our guidance, we can prepare a remote condition review when logistics or deadlines demand it. We also work with a network of trusted colleagues who can examine works in other cities, with the final report prepared by our studio. Wherever the painting is, we would rather collaborate on a first look than have you decide blind.
Can you examine a painting before an auction closes?
Yes — auction timelines are often short, so contact us as early as possible. Depending on the sale schedule we can examine at a preview, review high-resolution images and condition documentation, or advise on what to ask the auction house for.
What does a condition report contain?
A description of the painting and its construction, the condition of each layer — support, ground, paint, varnish — previous restoration we can detect, current damage or instability, and photographic documentation. Reports are written to be understood by owners and usable by insurers, registrars, and future conservators.
Is an examination the same as an appraisal?
No. We document physical condition; we do not provide values or authentication opinions. Our reports are often used by appraisers as part of their work, and we are glad to refer you to qualified appraisers.
